Get to know us

The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) is a research and education center under the College of Social Sciences of Addis Ababa University. It is established through a project (NORHED-II) between Addis Ababa University and University of Oslo (Norway) with financial support from NORAD (the Norwegian Development Agency). CSD offers a platform to conduct high-quality interdisciplinary research on priority development issues, thereby supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country. The CSD research priorities geared towards to sustainable development goals, sustainable livelihood, and governance for sustainable development, climate change, carbon economy, green economy, sustainable markets, green infrastructure, sustainable finance, sustainable cities and migration/mobility’s. The overarching objective of CSD is to carry out cutting-edge research on urgent local, regional, and international concerns of economic, social, and environmental issues related to sustainability. Using evidence-based and problem-oriented research outputs, it also sought to assist appropriate government bodies with policy challenges. To achieve its goals, CSD will work cooperatively with both domestic and foreign partners

Platform for researchers and thinkers

CSD serves as a platform to convene development thinkers and researchers across

various disciplines from global south and North in one place allowing them to do inter-disciplinary and multidisciplinary joint research work that primarily focuses on sustainable development.

Focuses on applied sustainability research

CSD undertakes various applied research initiatives that aims to solve societal problems at different scale. It implements the research initiatives in a project-based approach under identified thematic clusters in collaboration with partners. To achieve this objective, it forges partnership with relevant partners (including government agencies, research and academic institutes in and outside of Ethiopia) to mobilize resources, to transfer and adopt knowledge.

Policy informing output

CSD gives more attention to policy informing research (published as policy

briefing, working papers, peer reviewed journals and books) and organizes a series of seminars and international conferences on sustainability issues.

Our Goal

The overall goal of the center is to conduct high level sustainability research and to impact the policy of the country

Our Specific Objectives

  1. To conduct high profile inter-disciplinary multidisciplinary research by soliciting funds from internal and external sources

  2. To provide demand based short term capacity building trainings
  3. To offer consultancy services for government , international organizations and other stakeholders
  4. To disseminate research outputs and findings via appropriate platforms and publications mechanisms
